SWH Staff Beauty & Relaxation Tips on a Budget

Laurel Green - Director, Hospital Networks and Special Projects

1. Cook meals at home and try out some comforting, healthful foods like soups. Many great recipes are available; homemade soup is easy and quick to make. It is fun, relaxing and a great way to connect with family and friends. It can also be a stress buster! Ask your friends to bring the bread or crackers to go along with the soup. Someone should provide wine too.

2. One of my favorite beauty tips is to do your own pedicure at home. Use an exfoliating salt, scrub and sand your feet before putting on a moisturizing foot lotion for a refreshing and relaxing activity before bed.

3. One of my favorite relaxation tips is to be sure to setup a good night-time routine to enhance your sleep.  Take a warm bath by candlelight, read or watch soothing stories and go to bed at approximately the same time each night. Keep your bedroom cool and your bed clothing comfortable. Everyone looks better after adequate, restful sleep.

4. Avoid over-scheduling during the holiday season. You don't need to attend ALL events/ activities. Pick your favorites and avoid the additional obligatory attendance at events that are not satisfying.

5. Minimize time with negative people, even if they are your relatives! Stay close to those who give you energy and enthusiasm to face life's challenges.

6. To relax, incorporate some meditation time into each day. It may be only a few minutes of reading a devotional or a passage from your book of spiritual preference.  Allow yourself some intentional time for reflection and identification of your many blessings. This gratitude practice brightens your outlook and enhances a sense of calm and resourcefulness.

One of my favorite relaxation tips is:

1.  Play one of my favorite songs really loud, at home or in the car, and belt it out like the super-star I am inside!

2.  Take my dog for a walk in the park

Beauty tips:

1. I try to wear something in each outfit that makes me feel pretty or sexy (not everyone has to know what that thing is!)

When I start feeling the onsets of stress I go camping. There is nothing better than exerting my stress on a hike and having the silence of nature calm my nerves.

I find that climbing and overcoming the most difficult of hikes give me the confidence to say, "If I can do THAT I can do anything!"

My relaxation tip is to find a place in your home where only you are "allowed" to go. This gives you a place to escape and just get away for a minute. Some people like to meditate, sleep, pray, or read in their private space.

My space is in one of our closets. When I go in there my step-daughter and my husband know that I am taking time out for me and I am on a mental vacation. Sounds silly but in my fast paced life it works.

When I come back from my space I automatically feel less stressed and more at peace.
